A committed group of STEM enthusiasts, researchers, citizen scientists and educators have formed the Gympie Regional STEM Hub. One aspect of the Inspiring Australia strategy, the Regional STEM Hubs initiative aims to facilitate and promote the delivery of STEM activities through collaborations between organisations within each region. Regional STEM Hubs take responsibility for driving and growing science engagement in their region and promoting the value of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. The hubs provide engagement opportunities to showcase STEM disciplines and enhance interaction and cooperation between community, government, research bodies and industry for the benefit of local communities.
Using science as a rallying point and focus, Regional STEM Hubs seek to empower communities and build local resilience. Social inclusion is a central tenet of the Inspiring Australia strategy, and hub activity aims to improve “equity of access” for communities traditionally under-serviced and without ready access to science engagement – such as those in rural and remote areas, from low socio-economic or Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander backgrounds.
